PRELIMINARY DESIGN
Conceptualization and Requirements Gathering:
Scope Definition: Define the scope of electrical systems based on plant requirements, process needs, and regulatory standards.
Load Analysis: Determine electrical loads including motors, lighting, HVAC, instrumentation, etc.
Area Classification: Identify hazardous areas and classify them for electrical equipment selection.
SINGLE LINE DIAGRAM (SLD) DEVELOPMENT
Creating the SLD:
Power Sources: Identify power sources (utility, generators, UPS) and their distribution paths.
Distribution System: Layout primary and secondary distribution systems (voltages, switchgear, transformers).
Protection Devices: Include protective devices (circuit breakers, fuses, relays) for overcurrent and fault protection.
Control and Monitoring: Incorporate control panels, PLCs, SCADA systems, and instrumentation for monitoring and control.
DETAILED DESIGN
Detailed Engineering:
Equipment Selection: Specify transformers, switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, UPS systems based on load calculations and requirements.
Cable Sizing and Routing: Determine cable sizes, routes, and installation methods considering voltage drop, derating factors, and environmental conditions.
Lighting Design: Design lighting systems based on area classification and illumination requirements (normal and emergency lighting).
Earthing and Grounding: Design grounding systems to ensure safety and proper equipment operation.
Safety Systems: Specify fire and gas detection systems, ESD systems, and intrinsically safe equipment where necessary.
Instrumentation Integration: Coordinate with instrumentation and control disciplines to integrate electrical and control systems effectively.
Environmental and Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (NEC, IEC, API, etc.) and environmental regulations.
